WhatsApp abandoned cart messages for Shopify: when to send, what to say and how to measure it

A WhatsApp abandoned cart flow works best with 2 or 3 spaced-out messages, a direct link to the cart, a concrete reason to come back and an open conversation where the customer can ask questions.

Baymard Institute calculates, across 50 studies, that about 70% of online shopping carts are abandoned. Many of those shoppers won't come back on their own, but they do respond to a well-timed reminder. WhatsApp has an edge over email here: the message lands where the customer already talks to friends and family, and if they have a question they can reply right there.

Why do your customers abandon their carts?

The most cited reasons are unexpected extra costs, slow delivery, not trusting the site with payment details and long checkouts. Each one calls for a different message.

Reason (Baymard)%What to say in the message
Extra costs too high40%Spell out the shipping cost, or the order value where shipping becomes free
Delivery was too slow20%Say how long delivery takes to their area
Didn't trust the site with payment details19%Mention the payment methods you accept and your exchange policy
Checkout was too long or complicated17%Send a direct link to the cart, already filled
Returns policy wasn't clear13%Sum up your returns policy in one line

The percentages come from US online shoppers, and the mix shifts from market to market. The practical lesson holds everywhere: a reminder that only says "you forgot something" doesn't address the real reason they left.

When should you send each abandoned cart message?

A schedule that works for most stores: the first message after one hour, the second after 24 hours and an optional third at 48 or 72 hours, only if the customer hasn't bought.

  1. 1 After 1 hour A short reminder with the product, its photo and the cart link. No discount yet.
  2. 2 After 24 hours Address an objection: shipping cost, delivery time or payment options. Invite them to reply with any questions.
  3. 3 48–72 hours (optional) If your margin allows it, an incentive with an expiry date. If not, a final note about stock or the cart expiring.

Two rules keep you from being annoying: the sequence must stop the moment the customer buys, and you shouldn't send messages at night. In ConexiaChat, automations only go out between 9 AM and 9 PM in your team's time zone and stop on their own as soon as the order comes in.

What should the WhatsApp message say?

The customer's name, the product they left behind, a button linking to the cart and an invitation to reply. Short, in your brand's voice, with no fake urgency.

Example first message

Hi {{name}}, we noticed you left {{product}} in your cart. We've saved it for you here so you can finish whenever you're ready. Questions about sizing, shipping or payment? Just reply to this message. [Button: Complete my order]

  • Meta treats this as a marketing template: it must be approved, and the customer must have opted in to receive messages.
  • Don't put a variable at the very start or end of the text: Meta rejects templates with "dangling" parameters.
  • Include a way to opt out (for example, "reply STOP to stop receiving messages").

What happens when the customer replies?

That's half the value of the channel: the question that stopped the purchase arrives in writing. If nobody answers it quickly, the reminder is wasted.

Many WhatsApp marketing apps send the reminder and the reply sits in a chat nobody checks. In ConexiaChat the reply lands in your shared inbox with the customer's cart and order history alongside, and the AI agent can answer the question on the spot. The cart gets recovered in the same conversation.

How do you measure whether your abandoned cart flow works?

Track carts reached, orders recovered within a set window (for example, 7 days), recovered revenue and message cost. That gives you the return for each step.

  • Recovery rate = recovered orders ÷ carts that received a message.
  • Return = recovered revenue ÷ cost of the messages sent.
  • Compare each step: if the third message barely recovers anything, drop it.
  • Be skeptical of recovery rates that circulate without a methodology; measure your own.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the customer's permission to send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp?

Yes. Meta requires opt-in before a business starts a conversation. The usual approach is a clear checkbox at checkout to receive messages on WhatsApp.

Should I offer a discount in the first message?

Usually not. If you always offer a discount, you teach customers to abandon their cart and wait for it. Save it for the last step, if your margin allows.

Can I send abandoned cart messages to customers in the US?

No. Meta has paused marketing messages to US (+1) phone numbers. ConexiaChat skips those numbers automatically in marketing flows.
